Plus, if you didn't lube the cam, oil should of been there within seconds.
IF the cam was starved of oil then you may have other problems.  I would
lean more toward the bent metal shield too.  I don't think I have heard of a
non-lubed cam causing what you said happened.  But, there is another cam
related possibility, did you put all the cam caps back on in the right
direction?  They are offset a little and if you don't put them back on
correctly you could have a problem!!!  IF this did happen, I would put them
on right and start the thing and see what happens.  May not of caused any
major damage and if so, might as well try if you gotta replace the head
anyways!!  HTH!!
