You both are...

You can go longer than 3000km with synthetic oil, I'd say 5-6000km
easily.

When the oil turns black, the carbon, and whatever else slips past the
rings and seals, 
is bad for the lubrication properties of the oil, but it's still usable. 

Unless you have a $10,000 engine or something, THEN I'd change the oil
when it got dark...
Then again that should be towards the end of the 3000 mile oil change
interval, because
if the engine is in good condition, the oil doesn't turn black so
quickly. 

I change my 15-w40/20-w50 dino oil, the equivalent of every 4800-5000km,
and it seems to work...
