RE: TECH: Distributor

Pop the cap off the dist. and look inside. If there's slimy goo there then
you've got a leak. Did someone tell you it's leaking? Sorry to disappoint
you but the o-ring is rarely ever the culprit. The seal that resides inside
the dist. body through which the dist. shaft passes is the problem. If the
o-ring was bad, it would be a cheap, easy fix. The seal can be replaced
although it's fairly difficult. It's also an oddball size...12.5mm. If you
do try to replace the seal yourself, get the type that has a built in
spring. They seal better. If you want a new dist., call Adirondack or
Virtual World. If you want a rebuilt unit (Not by Bosch. They claim they
aren't rebuildable.) try this url
<http://www.jwsvws.com/Distributor%20Service.htm> I've never used their
services so I have no idea about their reliability. I installed a new unit
myself that I got from Adirondack. I have some used ones that I intend to
experiment with. Keep in mind that the leaking oil can ruin your hall
sender, about $90-100 by itself. Putting a new cap and rotor on is only a
very temporary fix.

If it is a 16V, try to get the VW part number for just the o-ring. otherwise
you have to replace the whole thing. at one point I was able to just get
the O-ring.
