Warm intake issue

Well, I thought I'd throw this out for comments.

Have an 8v (located out of state) that is very hard to start.  As if it's
choking for air.  Here's what I know:

Timing is textbook perfect.  Fuel delivery is wonderful.  I've checked both
repeatedly.  Spark is strong.  HOWEVER, here is the issue.  The warm air
intake is now off the car (manifold section rusted out, so I yanked it).  I
thought to tape off the opening for the warm air intake on the intake box
(left the cold air intake open), seeing as warm engine bay air going into
the intake would suck somewhat.  Now my question: did blocking this off w/
ducktape perhaps really restrict the engine's ability to pull in air?
