if it fits, go for it.

Junkyard prices should be lower than that. My PNP charges $20 for exhaust
manifold, $35 for turbo, and the other pieces should be somewhere
reasonable. The trick is finding a turbo diesel.

I'd say 8.5:1 is perfect for you. Some modern cars (Saab, etc) actually run
fairly high compression with their turbo's. They run low boost too, but the
combo makes it pull hard at lower RPM.

Sure, your perogative. If you want it to last, make sure the engine you
start with is in good shape.

Basically, that's right. Check 8vturbo.com to see their installs. One thing
I'd do for sure is install a load sensing CPR from an audi 5000turbo. This
will add a bit of fuel under boost. Wastegate/bypass valves should also be
used to make it last long. I dunno if the TD's had wastegates, probably not,
in which case its $$$ to fit it. A bypass valve is easy to install. Bypass
valves help keep the turbo spinning between shifts, etc.

Also if you're at less than 6psi, then you don't need an intercooler.

FYI, later Saab 9000 (post 87 I think) had a neato knock sensing system that
adjusted boost to keep it near knock. Stand alone system too. Kinda like the
KS in VW's, but let off on boost until knock was not detected.

Search the web for Saab tuners/fans. The system is called APC system.

Jonas
