Throttle bodies and carbs

Hi all,
just a quick question, I consider myself a novice so if any of this doesn't
make sense, forgive me.

I understand how a carb works now, but I've also heard throttle body as well
and do not have a clue what how it works, is it instead of the carb or does
it work with the carb?

Any info would be much appreciated

Also any one recommend any good models and prices?
