ahh just did this today and monday.
but I was replacing my waterpump so it was off the car. put an allen key
in two of the bol holes and stick a screwdriver between em so you put the
torque on the allen keys not the pulley. You will need a helper.

for the crankshaft pully i did the following.
i put a socket wrench on the center nut (was planning on replacing the
front main seal so breaking it loose was not an issue. and used an allen
key with a box end wrench on it for more torque and they all came out
wooo(wipes sweat from brow cause i got luck and the cranck shaft pully
bolt is still torqued you pull the two together loosening the allen head
and tightening the crackshaft bolt.

oh there is a 5mm allen screw just above the cranckshaft gear that holds
the lower cover on. its hard to find. upon install put this one on first

once you have it all lined up iaw the bentley I found a cheapass tool that
works very well for the tensioner. remember the tensioner has to rotate up
and clockwise for tightening or the lower timing belt cover wont fit and
will rub. here is the cheap ass tool Mike A. from atl used a fork but i
found one better. In the typical craftsman phillip screwdriver set ther is
the small phillips that is of almost no use well the fit inthe holes in
the tensioner just right. stick two in and rotate it w. a screwdriver
between the two adn poof instant special VW tool.

shit simehting just dawned on me. the metal timing belt cover on mine
already has a machined groove in it.. dammit was too tired gotta
disassemble again. and the lover cover is fubared too but its only plastic
and will disintegrate if it gets chewed up. the metal one will slice and
dive the new timing belt.

Oh Goto the stealership AHEAD of time and get NEW crankshaft and water
pump pully bolts, will cost like 1.00 each but you WILL need em. oh if
one of the botls gets stuck the standard aswer is pound your CV bolt tool
into the bolt and crank away. appearently it works better if it is less
rounded.
