typeR vs 83 GTI last sunday....

well, alee and i got the GTI on the road on sunday night after coping
with a leaky gastank for 3 weeks. so, as a final test to see if the patch
was holding, we filled the tank with some of the ultra94 good stuff and
headed home.

on the way, we spied a 2000 yellow typeR going up a road that we were
about to take. we were stuck at a red, turning left on the street the typeR
just went up, but as soon as we were able to, we blasted up after the kid.
as luck would have it, we managed to catch up to him about 100m before a red
light. however, he was beside us with no one in front of him, and we had
some cars in front of us, so i quickly cut in front of him, with barely a
turn signal. this made him aware of us, and of course, while sitting at the
light, i was kicking the revs up to let him know what my intentions were.
it was at this point that i turned to alee and told her that i was going to
show her once and for all that her car isn't slow (she's been complaining
lately that it doesn't feel all that fast).

when the light turned green, i opened it up and made all sorts of
noise. he sorta launched, but didn't really go for it, so i pulled into the
right lane, and left it in third, just waiting for him to catch up. sure
enuff, i looked over at the kids in the R, and saw a look on the passenger's
face that sorta looked like "oh, you just have NO idea what you've got
yourself into". i love that look. i especially like to wipe that look off
faces. hehe...

anyways, as the kid caught up, the GTIs motor was screaming away at
about 4000rpm (right where the fun starts), so i waited til i heard him jump
on it, and when he did, i stomped the loud pedal and watched as they started
moving backwards. we only had a chance to wind it out for about 5 or 6
seconds before hitting the next redlight. but i was feeling good - tho alee
and i were kinda wondering if maybe they were playing us...

so this time, they were behind us, and i could tell that they wanted to
try their luck from a standing start (where the GTI really shines, IMHO).
when the light went green, we launched, and the GTI started walking away.
initially, i thought that maybe they weren't racing, but, as i thought that,
i looked in my rearview mirror and saw the ITRs headlights shake violently
back and forth as he dropped second gear. at that point, i realized that
they were in it 100%, and didn't stop going til alee started making some
noise at about 170 or so. keep in mind that this is a long stretch of road
with only one intersecting street, so it's the perfect place for quick ego
boost/deflation.

at the end of it, we pulled over and the guys in the typeR pulled up
and asked what was under the hood. i told him that it was a 2.0 16V, and
then i told him that it was alee's car. they were extremely surprised about
that. i love that shit....

    figured someone might care...
