Backfire in airbox, timing issues?

I finally redid the entire fuel system on the 78 rocco this week. New fuel
pump, o-rings,..blew out the tank, etc,. I also removed the "decal valve"
and the ERG valve from the intake to exhaust and installed new vacuum
connections. Added two gallons of gas with some injector cleaner and turned
the key. Room! Holy shit....it runs again. Now here is the dilemma: The
car idles real fast and I noticed the exhaust was getting REAL hot quickly.
Even the muffler had smoke rolling off of it! I always thought that this
was a timing issue..Mechanical timing that is. (not ignition timing) I
removed the timing belt and timed everything and re-installed the belt.
Started the car,..the idle seems to have dropped a bit,..but still there is
back fire in the exhaust, (not much), but there is back fire in the intake.
(the rubber boot over the fuel distributor) So I lined the cam gear point
up with the top of the head. The bottom notch in the crank is NOW lined up
with the intermediate shaft mark and the 'O' on the flywheel is aligned.
The car will NOW start with one turn of the key except,... it idles pretty
fast, still has back fire in the intake and seems to be "flooding out" when
I press on the accelerator. There isn't a timing mark on the timing belt
cover for the crank like there is on the 16v's. Can someone please help me
out here?
Many thanks for the help and apologies for the long winded message.
Chris
