Re: engine dropping in/break in q's.

Joe,
It is easier to drop the engine/trans in as a unit if done from the top with a hoist and the hood removed.
You will need to tilt the engine at an angle to clear. Make sure to install with the F/R/drivers side engine mounts removed.
Instal the engine mounts on the engine/trans when in positioned in the engine bay.

There is a lot of controversey on break-in procedures.

The way I broke in the TT motor was:
Use conventional 30W, or 10W30 oil. (I used 30W)
Keep under 5K for the 1st 500 mi, and don't lug the motor.
Vary the RPM's, do not sustain a constant RPM.
Change oil and filter at 500mi.
Keep under 6K from 500-1000mi and run the oil above continuing to vary the RPM's.
Change oil and filter at 1000mi.
After 1000mi, run the oil above but run it hard, or the way you will drive it when it is broken in.
Bounce it off the rev-limiter, abuse it. :)
Change the oil and filter with the above oil at 1500mi.
Now drive it the way you will always drive it.
Change the oil and filter at 3000mi. with synthetic (if you plan to run synthetic)
It is now broken in.

This is what I decided on after talking to a dozen different "experts".
Worked for me.

Subject: engine dropping in/break in q's.

Two questions arise.  88 16v.

Can I bolt up the trans to the engine block and drop it in as a whole?  Or do I have to drop the block in by itself and then bring in the trans from the bottom?  Which is easier?

How many miles should I break it in for?  It's a 9A with all new rings, bearings, and seals.  Some people told me 300, some said 500 or 1000.  I'm thinking at least a couple of oil/filter changes during it.  Any input?

Thanks,
Joe
