mkII sunroof drooping...

folks,

for some odd reason my sunroof doesn't close/seat properly anymore. when
the crank is in the neutral position, the driver side rear portion of the
sunroof seats below the roofline of the car.

i went through the bentley, made the proper adjustments and while it seemed
like it worked, what i found was that 1. the liner that has the spring
hooked onto it makes the sunroof sag some 2. the seating varies depending
on how the sunroof was opened/closed - i.e. if i open it up all the way
such that it slides back and then close it, it droops - if i open it so
that the rear angles up like a vent and close it, it'll seat semi-properly.
3. the neutral position varies depending on how i open/close the sunroof
(see #2 above).

i seem to recall once i was cranking the sunroof closed and i heard a
snap/crackle/pop and skip while i was cranking (like it jumped a gear or
something) then it was ok.

the only other things i can think of are to completely remove the sunroof
and examine the cable/crank mechanism. visual inspection shows that the
parts look fine.

finally, question about the front adjusting screws. i have it fully turned
to push the front of the sunroof up and it _still_ is a 1/16" below flush..
any ideas?

thanks
dave
