Actually if you want to get the actual reading in volts from the alt. wire
it direct' that way you won't see any voltage drop from old wiring, length
of wire, etc.

Or you can wire it in line with a device to see how many amps it draws.
Like the fuel pump for instance.  If you start to notice it is drawing more
amps then normal it might be might to replace it before it goes completely.
