Re: Setting Timing

Pretty easy actually.... here's what I can currently remember in my
drunken state (and we have the ex-list moderator to thank for my current
condition)

Remove spark plugs (number one, or preferrably all)

Turn engine clockwise (normal direction of running) until you feel air start
to come out of the #1 spark plug hole

Stick something long and skinny (get yer mind outta the gutter) into number
one spark plug hole, letting it rest on the piston

Continue to crank engine clockwise until long skinny object ceases to
rise... this is TDC on the compression stroke (the strokes are important
here, pay attention... *snicker*)

Now take a look at those fancy marks on the camshaft pulley.... line them
up where they belong (straight up I believe? been a long time since I had a
Vdub....) if they aren't already there (this requires loosening of the belt)
<-- heh... I said "loosen the belt" *snickers again*

remove distributor cap, after noting where number one spark plug wire goes
in relation to the distributor body

ensure that rotor is pointing in the general area of the #1 plug wire

reinstall cap, reinstall plugs, reinstall anything else you took apart

Use a paint marker to make a mark on the flywheel... this is your TDC
mark....

This should get you close enough to make the engine run....

Then, the best way to finish the job is to use one a' them fancy timing
lights where you zap the light at the TDC mark and turn the knob on the back
of the light to see where the timing really is.... so you turn the dial to
6 degrees BTDC (damn, I do believe my memory is working ok...) and then
adjust the distributor (while car is running) so the light makes the paint
mark on the flywheel line up with the little pointer on the tranny
bellhousing

I *think* I covered everything... this will set valve timing as well as
distributor/ignition timing...

Please remember the 16v's are interference engines and if you screw this up
you will possibly bend valves, punch holes in pistons, etc etc

Enjoy!

John
