Safety and common sense dictate that you should always disconnect the
ground (or earth for our UK listers) connection to a battery first (be it
positive or negative.)  This of course eliminates the possibility of
shorting the wrench you're using to loosen the hot side against a grounded
part of the vehicle you're working on.
