I solved a verrry similar problem by enrolling in and
practicing from the TBerk School Of Blissful VW
Life...remove, clean (and dielectric grease) and
reinstall EVERY electrical connection under the hood.
Including grounds.  Some use Stabilant, I use Caig
DeOxit.  Contact cleaner and contact grease is far
better than nothing. 

Also check for oil in your distributor...they get old
and leak, seals are available...you may be messing up
your hall sender signals.
