Valve Noise, I think

Ok, I've had to remove the valve cover twice now to do some work, both times 
after putting everything back and starting the car I get a constant clacking 
which has subsided after the car was driven for a little while.

I didn't move the cams, belts, or lick the oil off the darn head or any 
other such wild thing that might cause something to be amiss .. so what's 
up?

The engine runs whisper smooth .. well a 16V whisper almost 99% of the time 
.. a few times I get that clacking after cold starts or whatnot.

Clue in a clueless guy.
