okay to check linkage , take a look at this web address (below in tag line) 
to my tech note on shift linkage replacement, it will give you an idea where 
to look for, and then check the "change clutch cable technote..
in this case self explanatory in pictures.

OK..what can I do to check and diagnose exactly what is wrong? I mean can I
just get under the thing and look around? Should I just follow the clutch
cable and pull on it for tension? Not totally inept here, but not a mechanic
either and have NO knowledge of trannies or clutches, but I would like to
get the car back and do something with it. It's only about a block away too,
so checking on it is a cinch.
