16v Test Drive and Questions

Went and looked at an awesome 16v Scirocco today. Car is close to mint with
the exception of like 1 or 2 tiny dings. Guess you can't ask for much more
than that from a 13 year old car. Anywho, off the bat I noticed it idled
rough until it warmed up a bit. Car was vibrating. Is this normal for a 16v
Scirocco? I have no experience with 16v VW's other than seeing them around
town from time to time, as both of mine are 8v's. Also I notice that when I
was cruising and holding a steady speed, the tach was jumping up a bit
irratically. I know I have heard some of you complain about similar
experiences with your cars and I was wondering what would cause this? I
didn't notice any engine noise change which makes me think it's something
electrical with the tach and not a mechanical problem. Power wise the car
had lots to give, but didn't seem to accelerate like my 8v Roc. It didn't
stumble on acceleraion, but didn't seem to have the power off the line. Car
was solid as hell and felt awesome. According to the dealer it only had one
owner and 77k on it when the odometer quit, and the PO didn't fix this.
That's the only part I REALLY don't like, because I am not sure of the
mileage now. Car is very very clean and a quick glance under the hood said
to me that everything was in order. Very different looking under there than
an 8v I must say. Well not very different, but different enough to make me
feel a little uncomfortable with working on it. That could be changed
though. If anyone has any tips or things I should be looking at on the car
please let me know. Also if I were to get the VIN number is there someone
who could run a carfax report so I can see some history on the beast.

Thank you,
Chris Grossi
