Swiss Cheesing your air box?

I've heard all different things about benefits and/or detractions involved 
with this. But what is the most effective way to do it? (size of holes, 
location, how many, etc.) I just want to reduce that electrical sound of my 
engine a little bit. I'm obviously not looking for any performance gains.
