Could be you are missing one of you brake caliper bolts and the sound is the caliper assembly falling into the rim.

I have this problem with my 1983 VW Scirocco and i cant figure out what it is.
When i am stopping usually harder there is a clunk after a few seconds of stopping, like when all the weight is pushed forward.
