Re: Timing/Distributer questions

Do you have a Bentley? If not, get one. For now, it doesn't matter where
anything else it, just get you crank on TDC and go by the mark on the
flywheel (not the one on the t-belt cover). Next, line up the cam. To do
this, look for the small line on the back of the sprocket. It should line
up with the edge of the head (not the valve cover). Next, take off the
distributor cap and (with the rotor installed looking at the motor from the
front of the car) the timing mark on the distributor (a little line on the
edge where the cap sits) should be around 1 to 2 o-clock. Then, check that
the marks on the intermediate shaft pulley and crank shaft pulley are lined
up (there are dots on them that should line up--use a mirror if you don't
have a hoist). Once everything is lined up, install the belt, make sure the
tension is correct (you should be able to only bend the belt between the cam
gear and intermediate gear by 90 deg--a little tight is OK right now because
the belt will stretch a tiny bit) then check the timing marks again.
Sometimes by tightening the tensioner it will throw off the timing by a
tooth so you will have to pull the belt off and try again. Once you are
satisfied with the timing, reinstall plugs correctly (you may have to restab
the distributor if you are having clearance problems between either the
vacuum canister and block or the hall sender connector and block--be
patient, you may have to use a long screwdriver to reset the oil pump drive
gear) and time the engine using the timing light. If you have more problems
with the timing moving around on you, you may have a sheered woodruff key
somewhere. HTH!!!
