I think major-domo is fine, its just that with more people come more
*useless* posts, whether it be conversations, humor, one liners, rice
posts, flame wars, ramblings, test messages, chit-chat, inside jokes,
threats, general dribble & the like. With one of those Egroups you do
have the option of limiting useless posts by having the reply only to
sender being initiated, but then the same people who haven't figured out
when to take stuff off the list will now have to figure out when to put
stuff on the list. That may prove difficult for some people, resulting
in everything continuing to go to the list. Besides, we may lose the
actual 5% of actual valuable content of the list if people just send it
to the sender and not the list. =)

Until people are educated in realizing when to send stuff to the list
and when not to, you will continue to see conversations, humor, one
liners, rice posts, flame wars, ramblings, test messages, chit-chat,
inside jokes, threats, general dribble & the like regardless of how the
email is hosted. I guess I always ask myself before sending "Could all
400+ people benefit from this post?" I can only hope others would do
the same. Only then will the list be a better place.

BTW, I wrote a song about, like to hear it? here it goes...
