Re: Bent Valve, Too High Revs!!

I'm just gonna throw this out here and you guys and gals do what ya want
with it. About 6 mos. ago I did a pretty decent test with different valve
springs. Here are the results and the conclusion I came to with the
building of my head. The important things I wanted out of all the springs
going into my 16v head was for them not to bind, (duh!) and all to be fairly
close in pressure specs. My old springs were all within 7 lbs and averaged
51 lbs. New VW springs averaged 57 lbs with a 5 lbs variance. Now the
important thing to remember here is that 5 lbs. difference is pretty damn
close. Now TT's set that I had ordered were all within 3 lbs. and averaged
89. Schricks that I got from a friend, (I only had 4 sets to measure), were
all within 2 lbs.
So what I came up with is a small shim on a new, stock VW spring put
pressure at 90 lbs. Plus I managed to get all the springs within 2 lbs
with shimming and after pressure testing and measuring,... I have little
worry of coil bind with my cams. If I change to a real crazy cam
profile,.. I may sit back down and do more computing,... but i doubt that I
will. With stock or TT/Autotech cam set,.. I can't see there being a
"bind" problem. Plus i figure that over 130k were on my old springs and
they were in really good shape. So in closing,... consider your cam
profile , and consider VW parts... They work and last.
later,
Chris
