I second this wholeheartedly.  Case in point:

'87 Scirocco I have here currently.  I've got records back
to the day it came off the truck, and it has had a
recurring problem of "poor cold start."  Exactly the same
symptom - i.e. crank and crank and just as you let off the
key, it starts.

After adding *one* additional ground wire the car starts
wonderfully, has been for a month so far.

Add a ground wire or two!  Takes 10 minutes and is cheap!
