Solid shifter?

seeing danny's shift rod question, got me to thinking. one of the guys
in the local club was talking about building a solid shift rod, i'm
assuming getting rid of a few of the bushings in the linkage to give the
shifter a more direct, albeit less forgiving, feel. anybody know what he
is talking about? has anybody done it?

also, along the same lines, i heard about a guy taking the sychros out
of the tranny in his civic. this would reduce the weight and rotating
mass in the tranny, right? basically turn it into a true racing tranny.
of course you would have to double-clutch and heel-and-toe ALWAYS.
again, anybody have any thoughts/experience?
