Oil filter seal failure isn't unheard of.  Did you follow the directions for tightening the filter?  Too loose, and oil leaks, too tight and the gasket squeezes out and then oil leaks like crazy.  On the diesels they actually have you use a torque wrench to tighten the filter, because of a history of this sort of problem, but it can happen on the gas engines too.
