In 84 there should only be "vented" and "solid" for the rotors (vented being 
GTI and some Scirocco).  I'm guessing that the "later" model 84 would be the 
vented one as VW switched to vented on all the Sciroccos about that time.  
The rotors need the matching pads since the pads for the vented rotors are 
the same shape, only a little thinner to clear the thicker rotor.  Make sense?

That's probably what the parts guy was looking for.
