Widest tires was:81 S with $ 2100.00 invested and counting...

Depends on the size of the rims and offset, and whether you are running
fender flares/modified fenders

My personal favorites:
15X7 - 215/45/15 (nearly exact same rolling dia as 175/70/13)
I am running these now and have had no rubbing (et32) on a Mk1 Scirocco.
14X7 - 225/50/14 (haven't tried yet but also nearly same rolling dia as
175/70/13 (0.9% larger))
These may be a little too wide to "fit in the fender".
I am going to try these for track duty even though they will be heavier and
cause more rolling resistance than 195/55/14's.
I just want to try it. :D

The trick in going with wider tires is to maintain the same rolling dia as
stock.
Unless of course you autocross the car and then smaller is better. :)
