[tech]: engine swap- fuck this, i give up



short version:
1.8 16v->2.0 16v swap, keeping my 1.8 head
trouble mating 5sp tranny to new engine (auto)
finally got that figured out, put everything back together fill the radiator 
and trickle, trickle, as water comes leaking out of the (all together now) 
busted water pump. fuck. change in my original. start it, and i hear a bad 
metallic squeaking sound from the pass side. thought it might be a belt, 
disconnected all belts, still there. timing belt tensioner? hmm. changed 
that, still there. if i let the engine run, a disturbing plume of smoke 
comes from the back of the engine somewhere pass side. the engine doesn't 
sound quite right, sort of a deep knocking combined with the squeak. now i 
cant tell where the squeak is coming from (flywheel/clutch? crank?). i'm 
pissed, and i need this car by monday. i won't have time for months after 
this. i think i may just bring it in to the shop and have them deal. wtf is 
wrong with this thing? i can't even troubleshoot cuz i've messed with just 
about everything in the last 2 weeks. highlights:
new clutch/pp/seals
new lifters/head gas./bolts etc.
old head on new engine

so i don't know. i'm guessing the worst and thinking maybe i have a spun 
bearing? if that's what it is, does the engine have to be removed to fix? i 
bought the engine kind of blind, so i don't know how it works. thoughts?
