shifting fast? How?

After letting a friend drive my car.. he can chirp 1st-3rd gear. how did he
do that? what techniques do you guys use? how would i go about practicing on
shifting fast and efficiently. right now.. i have some shifting problems in
my linkages.. i don't know if that's cause of the tranny or the linkage, but
i can't get into 2nd alot of the time, but all other gears are fine. i can't
figure it out.
