The latter was my experience as an paramedic in the late 1970s and 
early1980s - the passenger compartments of VWs (and their occupants) 
definitely seemed to survive major crashes much better than other small 
cars,especially Japanese ones. Lots of dead folks in Subarus, don't recall 
any in Volkswagens. I don't remember any big differences between USA and 
German cars.
