John,

Park your car with one front wheel firmly against a curb, parallel with the
car. Then have a helper turn the wheel as hard as they can one way, then the
other while you eyeball the steering column u-joint (interior), steering
gearbox (engine bay), and tie-rod ends. One of these components should
reveal the play. If not, then it is an internal problem with the steering
rack.

I would suspect it is actually the bushings that hold the rack, this has
been a problem in all the A1's I've owned, especially if there is or was an
oil leak that got things dirty - makes the rubber deteriorate.

I have had good luck with polyurethane replacements curing your symptoms.
