I cleaned my oil cooler by soaking it in solvent, and then washing the 
coolant passage with soap, then water.  Let a little oil run through the oil 
part and then let it set for a few hours so any water could evap.  For the 
upper gasket, it is easy.  I took the o-ring off the *new* filter.  The old 
o-ring went on the new filter (as it gets changed more often). 
Everything worked well after this.
