The Rabbit and Scirocco were both designed about the same time with the
scirocco debuting first to "test the waters," if I remember right.  As for
the 924- it was designed by Porsche for Audi, on a verbal agreement with
the VAG boss, who then died.  The new boss didn't want it, so Porsche was
stuck with it.  That also would explain why in it the 924's later years it
became more "Porsche" than it had been earlier in it's lifespan.  I believe
1977 was it's first year.
