Synchro is a viscous coupling system that senses loss of traction when a
wheel spins.  then it sends traction to the other wheels.  Unless there is
loss of traction, it operates as a front wheel drive system (plus the extra
weight).  Supposedly it doesn't like to operate with more than 300
horsepower.  You would be hard pressed to do better than a Synchro wagon in
terms of price.
