First gear problems

Having problems with first gear. Many times when I
start out, as I hit the gas, the transmission pops out
of first with a grind. Sometimes it's okay. Sometimes
it will stay if I keep my hand on the shifter and
force it to stay. I've had lots of transmission
problems in the past with an '84 scirocco, and I think
I got ripped off to the tune of well over $2,000. They
always tell me I need a rebuild. All other gears are
good.
