1979 Scirocco...motor?

Ok,,,,,so now that I own this older rocco,....what do I do about this little
1.6L engine?  Who has one, (an older rocco), and what engine are you
running?  Will this 1.6 have any "get up and go?"  This thing sure is tiny
looking compared to my other 16v's.  It's got to be simpler to work on,  no?
