Clogged cat?

well, i had an interesting experience. i tried to start my car up and it
would just crank over until the battery died. well a few hours later i
tried it again...and it cranked over a few times then started, ran for a few
seconds and then BOOM! Then the car died. So i tried starting it again and
it start right up but was VERY LOUD. Looked underneath and the exhaust from
between the downpipe and in front of the cat was disconnect (blew it out).
So i got out the coat hanger and rigged it up, so now it's fairly quiet.
Anyhow, the car seems to run better than it did before. what i am assuming
is that the cat was somewhat clogged restricting exhaust flow so the car
didn't run well. Then since i drove from northern wisconsin all the way to
michigan, it caused the cat to heat up and become completely blocked (after
it sat overnight and cooled down) so it wouldn't start and finally enough
pressure built up and it blew all the stuff outta the cat as well as the
whole pipe. Does this sound right? If so, it looks like i'll have to
finish hollowing out the cat.
