Re: Bike Rack?

Right thought, wrong product. I used an el-cheapo
rack for a trip, and when I got home, I realized that
my bikes had rubbed paint off each other in transit,
and the rubber feet of the rack had rubbed dull spots
in the paint. You get what you pay for, and I
wouldn't trust a couple $900 bikes on a $30 rack.

For top mount racks -

If you are going to get a rear mount rack, the least
expensive one that is good quality (that I have
personal experience with) is a Rhode Gear. It has
rubber supports that hold the bikes apart. Also, rear
mounts are good if you have more than one car. If you
get rid of the car, you haven't sunk $$$ into
specialised roof mount components that only work on
your vehicle.

Also - if using a rear mount rack - make sure you use
a bungee cord or some rope, run it through the tires &
tie it to the pedals to keep them from moving. Wind
will cause your wheels to rotate, and the knobbies on
the tires will ruin your cars paint in a hurry. Also
make sure that you set the bikes up so they are held
away from the car, NOT leaning on the back.

Unless you are using steel frame bikes, you shouldn't
have any worries about the rear hatch glass. Alumium
& newer chromoly bikes are lighter than a sack of
groceries.
