Yes it can.

VW made a couple of vehicles with this set up for the European market only.
The G60 mounts in front of the engine like you'd expect, but there is no
room for the alternator, so the alternator is moved to the back of the
engine near the intake manifold.

I believe the cars that VW sold with this configuration were the Golf GTi
Special Edition and the Golf Ralley. If you start researching those cars,
you may be able to find the parts to make it happen.
