Okay guys...

The compressor does not engage, but the idle goes up to 1100-1200 rpm when
I switch the A/C on. I looked in the "sight glass" as per Bentley and it
looks clear, whatever that means. No bubbles or streaks.
I think I tried to fix this once before and found that the "low pressure
switch" was open, keeping the compressor from engaging because
(supposedly) the A/C charge was too low. But I'm not positive

One reason you see no bubbles is your compressor is not pumping
refrigerant because the clutch is not engaged. Likely cause: low/no
refrigerant charge. Have an a/c knowledgeable person hook up a set of gauges
and check your high/low side pressures. You may just need to check for leaks
and recharge.
