16V Handling -- a story

In my opinion after autoxing my 16V for a season or so I only found three
negative attributes of the 16V. First off is that (in my opinion) in stock
configuration it understeers HORRIBLY. It may be my driving style and
newness to the sport but the car pushed everywhere. I could only lessen it
by running 45psi in the front tires (which lead to a annoying shudder as the
car tried to plow off course. It just seemed too heavy for its own good.
Second off was turn in response. The steering rack ratio could be alot
quicker. But I think this may be largly due to running 60 series tires on
14's. Ill see when my Revo 17's with 40 series A520s arrive next week.
Lastly and perhaps most annoying is not being able to downshift into first
while rolling ARRGHHHH! I hate that, coming hot into a turn and trying to
jam it into first so I can be on the power apexing through the turn, and it
always works out to be a teeth grinding thud and shudder if you are man
enough to force it into gear or rolling through the turn and slowing down so
much it was pointless. But then again YMMV.

This isn't very odd at all!! The 16v is a very neutral handling car. The
stock rear bar is 25mm, so he's running the same diameter front and back.
This setup should give a "little" more understeer than desired, but it's not
going to "push" really bad. Putting the 28mm rear bar on will not hurt
handling at all.

This does seem odd especially when everyone tells us to stiffen the rear up
tighter than the front. Some autocrossers that I know don't do anything to
the front and make the rear rock solid. You could always put the rear bar
on and then pull it if it doesn't improve things. Have you had a 16v
Scirocco before? I've noticed that after driving a Rabbit or Jetta for
years that once you get into a car that is setup for performance from the
factory, the handling blows you away and you think it cannot be improved on
when it actually can!!! It is great that you got it to handle so well, but
if you do try the rear bar, you can always take it off and I am sure someone
here on the list will take it off your hands for you or maybe you can make
it fit an Accord or something for your wife!! (Hee Hee). Just get her a
Jetta or Passat and she'll be happy!!!! HTH
