Why upshift light

I believe VW put the upshift lights on those 80's cars to get an samll 
increment in CAFE.  My 84 GTi doesn't ahve one, but other VWs do.  It is 
easily deleted by removing the relay (or letting your fuse box corrode 
like happened on my 87 16V)

NOt a bad thing, IMO, for performance.  Just like the infernal key in 
ignition chime, nothing requires you to keep it active.
