That can certainly be done... I've heard of a better way to do it, though..
This does require a little creativity, and some balls.

Buy a couple 2x4's and some plywood, and what you're going to do is build a
rectangular frame along the bottom of your trunk.

The frame will be 4" high (the height of the 2x4 + some 1/4" plywood. There
isn't much need to bolt the wood into the actual car if you make it fit just
right, mainly because there's nowhere for the frame to go. One thing that
should definatley be done, is seal it with silicone caulk (no air leaks).

Now, you cut a round hole over the spare tire well.. Now, you can fit a nice
12" or 15" sub and have a much larger volume for the speaker enclosure. Now,
here's something.. mount the sub from the bottom of the plywood, that way
you can place a hard grille over it, and the Speaker won't be protruding
over the surface nearly as much.

Also, a good idea is to mount any crossovers inside the enclosure (but not
the amp, cause it will get too hot).

This is a great way to put a sub in our tiny cars, and sitll have lots of
room left in the trunk. Hypothetically, when the rear seats fold down, it
will be nearly flush with the speaker enclosure/platform.

You can cover the plywood with the carpet of your choice (and it'll look
really professional). The spaces right behind the rear wheel wells will not
be part of this enclosure, but it's a nice place to keep a few quarts of
oil, or a bottle of coolant.

PS- make sure the little drain hole at the bottom of the wheel well is
sealed.. we don't want our speakers wet, right?

I'm going to do this to my '81 Rocco once it gets warm out.

I once had a dual 12" box in the trunk of my '80, and I had about 5" left in
the back of the trunk, and that was just ridiculous.

Heh.. not bad for being hopped up on Codiene, eh? I just had a wisdom tooth
yanked out at 2:00 today.. whee!
