0x. sensor question[16v]

I believe my O2 sensor is bad and its time to get it replaced even if its
not. 
My question is can i replace my 3 wire sensor with a universal single wire
bosch unit thats available at any parts store?  I would guess that this
would be no problem but maybe there is a reason why i have to have the
heated one?  BTW, i have a TT downpipe with the O2 up near the manifold
outlet so I'm not too worried about needing the heated one given that it
should already heat up quick enough being so close the engine.
So can i just splice in the green wire connector to the new sensor and go
or is there any reason that i need to use a 3 wire sensor?
