Not entirely true, beginning in 78 or 79 I think the doors have a big reinforcement inside to protect against side collision.
74 and 75 Sciroccos have the "motorsport" reinforcement of the strut towers and motor mounting points.
I think the chassi has been slightly redesigned during the years when they find out weak spots.
FI cars are heavier than carbs car etc

Inside sound deadening can be less in an early car, but seats, both front and back are lighter on early cars. Less bumpers = less weight.
