Vr6 plug Q

My friend has a 96 passat vr6,  He wants to change the spark plugs.  We went 
to pull the plug wires and we became stupefied. Is there a special tool or 
something to pull out the plug wires? We don't just want to yank on the 
wires.  Thanks for any help.
