RE: Should I buy this one ($800)

The downpipe isn't cheap, but if the rest of the car really is as good as
you say, $800 is a very good price. Whether it's a "steal" or not would
depend on how mint/non-mint it is. I paid $3000 for my "mint" '88 two years
ago, and it really was in *excellent* condition.

The problem with the downpipe is that it also includes the catalytic
converter. It isn't a separate piece like on most cars. Your "bolt-on"
options include the VW part (~$400) or the Techtonics part (~$350). The TT
part is obviously a little cheaper, and supposedly just a little better
performance than stock. I'm not sure about the TT part, but the OEM part is
stainless steel.

You have more options if you know someone who can weld or if you want
something cheaper in the long run. TT sells a number of interesting parts,
including a downpipe that is meant to bolt to a "normal" catalytic
converter. I don't remember prices, but I think it's a little more for both
parts than for the single piece DP, but it'll save you money a few years
down the road if one piece goes again.

What's wrong with the current DP? It's usually one of two things: Either the
cat. conv. is clogged (causing bad performance), or the flex-joint is
cracked where it joins the exhaust manifold (causing loud noise and fumes in
the car...these fumes are BAD for you!). If you can weld, you can always
play mix-n-match with another downpipe if you can find one used. TT also
sells cats and flex joints that you can weld to your current DP. If the flex
joint is broke, it's probably 'cause the front & rear motor mounts are bad
(maybe the side ones too). Replace 'em! The front & rear are easy, but the
side ones are kind of a bitch.

BTW, TT's website is http://www.tttuning.com
