Good 16V trannies are rare. The 16V tranny has a
beefier shaft. However, close ratio trannies are not
rare. All Rabbit GTI, A2 GTI and Jetta GLi came with
close ratio trannies. Many 83 & later MK2 Sciroccos
also came with close ratio trannies (in the U.S.).

A close ratio trannie will get you to highway speed
faster. The downside is higher rpm on the highway
(4000 rpm @75mph on my 9A tranny). Some folks change
out fifth gear on their close ratio trannies to give
more livable highway cruising - this is my plan.
