My car does this exact same thing occasionally.  When I first got the car
last spring I changed cap, rotor, spark plugs and fuel filter.  After I did
that, it only happened maybe once all summer, but in the fall, it came back.
I changed the fuel filter again, but that didn't fix it.

Mine isn't this bad.....my car does it only when I'm accelerating hard in
2nd or 3rd gear

if you ran out of gas, you should start by changing the fuel filter.

I'll change the cap and rotor again soon and see if that helps.  I also have
a new fuel pump sitting in my garage, I will probably install it sometime
this week (whenever I get done all this homework and these exams)  and see
what happens.  I'll let you know if any of these solve the problem
